How does Botox work?

Botox and Dysport are similar medications that are made from Botulinum toxin and stop communication between the nerve and the muscle; which diminishes fine lines and wrinkles.

If you look in the mirror and raise your brows, you may notice lines on your forehead. When the muscle is hindered after Botox, the lines are decreased or may go away all together. Along with decreasing forehead lines, Botox use improves frown lines, crow’s feet, and more.

Why Botox® Cosmetic?

Botox® Cosmetic is injected into the muscle to temporarily relax muscle movements, resulting in an improvement of the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Why Dysport® Cosmetic?

Dysport® (abobotulinumtoxinA) is a neuromodulator that works similarly to Botox® and can be used interchangeably. Clinical studies have shown that Dysport® is effective in reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It functions by temporarily blocking nerve signals to the injected muscles, leading to muscle relaxation and a smoother, more youthful appearance. Due to its formulation, Dysport® may diffuse more than other neuromodulators, making it a preferred option for treating larger areas with natural-looking results.

Botox vs. Dysport: how do they compare?

Botox Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA) and Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA) are both prescription forms of botulinum toxin type A. Each blocks the release of acetylcholine, the chemical messenger nerves use to tell a muscle to contract.

Their FDA labeling differs in two main ways. Botox Cosmetic is approved for more facial areas than Dysport (see the closer look below). And each product is measured in its own units, which cannot be compared to or converted into units of another botulinum toxin product, so your dose is planned for the specific product you receive.

How can Botox help me?

When Botox or Dysport are injected into the muscle the nerve impulses are temporarily blocked preventing muscle contraction. This results in muscle relaxation and decreased movement, reducing the appearance of lines or wrinkles in the area being treated. Frown lines

Between the eyebrows (glabellar lines): approved for Botox Cosmetic and for Dysport.

Crow’s feet

At the outer corners of the eyes (lateral canthal lines): approved for Botox Cosmetic.

Lines that form when the muscle that raises your brows is active: approved for Botox Cosmetic.

Hyperhidrosis

Botox, which has the same active ingredient as Botox Cosmetic, is approved for severe underarm sweating when medicines applied to the skin do not work well enough. It is not known whether it is safe and effective for sweating in other areas.

What should I know before getting Botox?

Before your visit

Avoid alcohol, aspirin and anti-inflammatory drugs. Avoid alcohol two days before the treatment and do not take aspirin or anti-inflammatory medications two weeks prior to injections. It may take up to 7 days to see results.

What happens during your Botox or Dysport appointment?

During your visit

Your provider will assess the areas you would like to treat and create a plan around your goals. They may mark the injection points, then use a fine needle to place small amounts of product into the targeted muscles. With Botox Cosmetic, frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines can be treated in the same visit.

What to expect after Botox injections

After your visit

For two hours after treatment, keep head above heart level and frown and look up several times during this period. Do not rub area that was treated. Slight bruising, redness, and headaches are common side effects of Neuromodulators. These should resolve after a couple of days. Tylenol can be used for headaches and arnica tablets/creams can be used for bruising.

Is Botox or Dysport right for me?

Botox Cosmetic is approved for adults, and Dysport for adults younger than 65, with moderate to severe lines in their approved areas. Your skin, age, and health all affect whether treatment can give you the results you want.

Do not inject neuromodulators if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, are allergic to any ingredients in the product, or suffer from neurological/neuromuscular disorders. Please inform us if you have any questions about this prior to your treatment. We will review your medical history and help determine if this treatment is best for you during your consultation.

Safety information from the product labeling

The FDA-approved Medication Guides say not to receive Botox Cosmetic or Dysport if you:

are allergic to any of its ingredients
have had an allergic reaction to another botulinum toxin product
have a skin infection at the planned injection site
are allergic to cow’s milk protein (Dysport only)

Tell your provider about any muscle or nerve condition (such as ALS or myasthenia gravis), breathing, swallowing, or bleeding problems, drooping eyelids, past facial surgery, every medicine you take, and any botulinum toxin product you have had in the last four months.

Side effects listed in the labeling include discomfort or pain at the injection site, headache, tiredness, and eye problems such as drooping or swollen eyelids and dry eyes. Both products also carry a boxed warning that the toxin’s effects may spread beyond the injection site. Get medical help right away if you have trouble swallowing, speaking, or breathing, or muscle weakness all over your body, in the hours to weeks after treatment.

Yes, Botox® is very safe, as long as the right professional is performing the procedure. Botox® has been around since the 1970s and has had a remarkably safe history.

Are Botox injections painful?

Typically, patients do not complain of pain during Botox injections. We do offer topical numbing or Pronox for patients who are concerned with pain or discomfort.

When will I see results from my Botox treatment?

Results vary from patient to patient. Botox® Cosmetic typically begins working in a few days and reaches full effect at two weeks. Additional treatments may be needed to achieve your desired result.

Does Botox prevent the formation of deeper wrinkles?

Yes, by reducing the intensity and frequency of muscle contraction, these treatments prevent the formation of deeper lines in the long term.

How much does Botox cost?

What are the risks associated with Botox?

As with any procedure there are risks and considerations when being treated with Botox. Your provider will answer any questions that you have and provide consent forms for you to look over at the time of your treatment.

What's the difference between Botox and Dermal Fillers?

Botox relaxes expression muscles to minimize and prevent the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Dermal Fillers are injected under the skin to add contour and replace lost volume.

How long does a Botox appointment take?

The injections themselves are quick. The maker of Botox Cosmetic says treatment takes about 10 to 15 minutes, and the maker of Dysport says the procedure generally takes 10 to 20 minutes.

Can I get Botox while pregnant or breastfeeding?

The FDA notes that cosmetic botulinum toxin injections are not recommended while pregnant or breastfeeding, and the product labeling states that it is not known whether these medicines can harm an unborn baby or pass into breast milk.
