They are different from neuromodulators such as Botox and Dysport, which are injectable drugs that keep certain muscles from tightening so wrinkles do not show as much. Fillers add volume instead.

How hyaluronic acid fillers work

Hyaluronic acid, one of the materials used in dermal fillers, is a type of sugar found naturally in body tissues such as skin. In gel form, it can combine with water and swell, which creates a smoothing and filling effect. Most fillers are temporary because their materials are gradually absorbed by the body over time.

What should I know before getting Dermal Fillers?

Before your visit

Treatment time will vary depending on the areas treated. Refrain from heavy exercise for 24 hours following the procedure. Stop taking any blood thinners, fish oil, vitamin E, and anti-inflammatories 5-7 days before treatment. Consult with your doctor before you stop any medications. Avoid alcohol and red wine three days before treatment. Eating fresh pineapple and taking arnica or bromelain tablets 3-5 days before your procedure may decrease the likelihood of bruising. Fillers can last between 6-12 months or longer depending on the product, location, and amount of filler used. The longevity of results will vary from person to person depending on everyday activities and metabolic rate.

What happens during a filler appointment?

During your visit

A typical filler visit follows a few steps:

Your provider evaluates your facial appearance and skin, and photos may be taken.
The injection sites may be marked, then cleansed with an antibacterial agent.
A numbing ointment or a cold instrument may be used to chill and numb the skin.
Each injection usually takes only a few moments per site.
Afterward, any markings are cleaned off, and you may be offered an ice pack.

What to expect after getting Fillers?

After your visit

Do not rub the treated area for the remainder of the day. Bruising, redness, and tenderness are common side effects of fillers. Temple fillers can result in tightness for up to 48 hours. Tylenol can be used for pain relief and arnica tablets/creams can be used for bruising. In most cases, you can return to work immediately following treatment.

Am I a candidate for Dermal Fillers?

The ideal candidate shows signs of volume loss, fine lines and wrinkles and a tired or aged look, is physically healthy, does not smoke, has realistic goals, and is committed to maintaining good skin health.

Do not use dermal fillers if you are pregnant or breastfeeding or are allergic to any ingredients in the products. Please inform us if you have any questions about this prior to your treatment. Safety information from the FDA

The FDA advises telling your provider before treatment if you:

have inflamed or infected skin, such as pimples, rashes, or hives (treatment should wait until it is managed)
have a bleeding disorder, severe allergies, or a history of anaphylaxis
are allergic to lidocaine or to materials some fillers contain, such as collagen, eggs, animal products, or bacteria
have joint, tendon, or blood vessel disease in the hand, if you are considering hand treatment

The FDA also notes that filler safety is unknown during pregnancy or breastfeeding, under age 22, and in people prone to excessive scarring, such as keloids.

Common side effects listed by the FDA include bruising, redness, swelling, pain, tenderness, itching, and rash. The most serious risk is accidental injection into a blood vessel. The chances are low, but it can cause serious and possibly permanent complications, including tissue death, vision problems including blindness, and stroke. Seek immediate medical attention if you notice unusual pain, vision changes, white, gray, or blue skin near the injection site, or any signs of a stroke during or shortly after treatment.

What are fillers?

Facial fillers are injectables that can be used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and other characteristics of aging skin, providing patients with a smoother and younger looking complexion.

Do facial fillers hurt?

The idea of facial fillers can seem scary to patients, due to a fear of pain resulting from the injections. Some patients do report mild discomfort during treatment, but there are ways to minimize this. Many fillers contain lidocaine, a mild anesthetic that helps reduce pain during and after treatment. Topical numbing cream may also be used.

Is Botox the same as a filler?

Many of our patients who are interested in facial fillers are interested in Botox as well, but Botox is not actually a facial filler. Instead of filling lines and wrinkles, Botox works by gently immobilizing muscles in the face to prevent additional wrinkles from forming. Despite their differences, Botox can be used to enhance and prolong the effects of facial fillers. This is because fillers break down over time whenever the muscles surrounding the injected area are used. Since Botox acts as a muscle relaxer, the fillers are unable to break down as quickly, which helps the skin remain wrinkle-free and youthful for a longer period of time.

Do facial fillers have side effects?

As with any treatment, facial fillers have the potential for side effects. Typically, the side effects are mild and resolve within the first few hours or days following treatment. Common side effects can include bruising, bleeding, and swelling.
